I decided to ride across America for two reasons:
We found America By Bicycle and I started training…and training…and training. To do the ride comfortably I needed to be able to ride at least 600km/week before I left Australia and so I built up incrementally. Initially I was riding a straight handlebar hybrid bike and was finding the going a little tough; but then Total Rush Specialized came on board and I said “farewell “(fondly) to the postman pat bike and “hello” to a very nifty Specialised Roubaix. Suddenly the hills seemed smaller and I seemed faster.

| The Training: | |
| Hours spent training: | My wife, Della says too many! |
| Km’s covered: | 7200 since January (That’s a lot of trips up and down Beach Rd!) |
| Highest peak scaled: | Don’t know its name, but it’s got a road at the top called “Quinn’s Parade!! |
| Number of punctures: | I lost count (3 in the space of 10 minutes does that to you) |
| Number of hot chocolates: | 435 |
| Training partners: | Dr Dave, Richo, Hutchy and thousands of other Beach Rd cyclists who have pulled, pushed and “gently” encouraged me. |
| Thanks to: | Dr Dave for … knowing CPR and how to use a defibrillator (Just in case!) |
| Richo for… finally learning the hand signal for “glass ahead”! | |
| Hutchy for… knowing that you’re only as fast as your slowest rider (Often, me) and ensuring that we were well fed along the way. (He’s the only man I know who can eat a plate of eggs benedict and then ride another 50km!) |
